Operations and HR rarely fit neatly into a 9–5 desk job. At Craven, the role blends strategy, people support and problem-solving across a wide range of businesses. Here’s a glimpse into a typical day for our Operations and HR Business Partner, where no two conversations — or challenges — are ever quite the same.
My HR office has three rescue dogs, a playlist that belonged to my mum, my own weird and wonderful playlists, and a view of either the sea in Margate or the trees in North Yorkshire.
Not a typical HR setting.
But then again, HR done well isn’t about sitting behind a desk from 9–5.
At Craven we focus on output, trust and impact, not presenteeism. That flexibility means my working day flows around the work, the people I support, and sometimes a walk along the sea to think through a complex problem.
With music playing in the background (it’s always on), my day can move across very different worlds.
One moment I might be supporting a business in a specialist sector, such as a funeral director or heritage railway, with people challenges and team wellbeing.
Next, helping a construction or manufacturing business think about workforce planning and culture.
Later, I might be advising a health and social care provider on safeguarding, working with charities on governance and volunteer engagement, or supporting organisations through the challenges of navigating new employment law changes.
This is how diverse my client base is, and why no two days are ever the same.
No two days are ever the same.
Some work is strategic – helping leaders build strong people foundations, structures and cultures that support growth.
Some is operational and real time – supporting leaders through sensitive conversations, complex employee relations issues or moments when they simply need a calm, trusted sounding board.
Across every sector the common thread is always the same:
People.
Behind every policy, investigation or strategy is a human story.
And that’s the part of HR I care about most.
One of my favourite parts of the week happens on Thursdays.
I go into school to read with my grandson, Ralfie.
No emails.
No policies.
No investigations.
Just books, imagination and a little boy discovering the joy of stories.
For me, this is where the magic happens.
Because the work we do in HR — building fair workplaces, strong cultures and supportive leaders — ultimately shapes the world the next generation will grow into.
After 25+ years in HR, one thing still guides me:
Treat people as people, not problems to manage.
And with music playing, the dogs waiting for their next walk, and leaders trusting me to help them navigate the complex people stuff…
It’s a career I’m incredibly grateful for.
And when it’s time to properly switch off, you’ll usually find me somewhere that lets me breathe — my favourite escape is a log cabin in Finland, surrounded by forests and stillness… although I’ll never say no to a beautiful beach either.
