Blood Transfusion

About the course

Course Description

The course begins by explaining why maintaining the quality and safety of blood products is essential. It then explores the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in blood transfusion and how this works in practice.

Next, the course covers the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005, outlining the legal requirements involved, before moving on to safe transfusion practices, including the correct storage of each blood product.

It then examines the anatomy and physiology of blood products and guides learners through each stage of the blood transfusion cycle, including the standard safety checks required when handling blood products.

Finally, the course reviews the most common and serious adverse clinical incidents related to blood transfusion and concludes with an overview of the equipment required to safely administer a transfusion.
