The Fire Safety Order 2005

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 was introduced in October 2006. Fire and rescue authorities and other bodies (‘enforcing authorities’) have a duty to enforce fire safety in non-“domestic premises.

The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974

The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that as of 2011 defines the fundamental structure and authority for the encouragement, regulation and enforcement of workplace health, safety and welfare within the United Kingdom.

The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992

The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 apply to workers who use DSE daily, for an hour or more at a time. We describe these workers as ‘DSE users’. The regulations don’t apply to workers who use DSE infrequently or only use it for a short time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mandatory health and safety training is training an employer must provide to make sure people can work safely and meet legal duties. What’s required depends on the job, the workplace risks, and the organisation’s risk assessments. It typically includes induction training, training on safe systems of work, and any instruction needed to use equipment or follow procedures safely.

Statutory health and safety training is training that an organisation must provide because it is required by law, or because a regulator or statutory body expects it to be delivered to meet legal or regulatory standards (this is common in regulated sectors such as health and social care).

Mandatory training is usually identified through risk assessment and falls into two broad areas:

1) General health and safety training (for everyone)
All employers must provide adequate health and safety information, instruction, training and supervision. This usually includes induction training and workplace-specific rules and procedures (e.g., reporting hazards, accident reporting, emergency arrangements, and basic safe working expectations).

2) Job-specific / risk-based training (for particular roles or tasks)
Some training is needed because of the specific hazards of the job or tasks being carried out. For example, training may be needed for manual handling, working at height, using work equipment or machinery, hazardous substances, or workplace-specific procedures. The exact training required will depend on the risks and how work is carried out.

If you’re unsure what training is needed to stay compliant, we can help you map requirements based on your activities, risk assessments and sector expectations.

Mandatory Health and Safety training courses help to ensure that staff are equipped with the knowledge needed to carry out their jobs safely and competently. This results in fewer accidents and improved productivity. This is especially important for managers, who can lead by example and ensure company-wide adoption of the relevant legislation and processes.
