Asbestos can be found in any building built or refurbished before the year 2000. Houses built in fifties, sixties and seventies are very likely to include asbestos. It could be in the house or building you are working on right now. HSE has launched a new campaign to remind those working in construction to manage the risks associated with asbestos.
Asbestos & You – Work Right to keep Britain safe
The Building Safety Regulator (BSR) will regulate high-rise residential buildings in England. Registration for these buildings opens in April 2023. Buildings required to register are defined as 18 metres tall or higher, or at least 7 floors tall, and must contain 2 or more residential units. Buildings will be registered with a named person responsible for maintaining their safety.

Some substances can cause lif
e-changing illnesses and diseases such as cancer, asthma and dermatitis. Effects can be immediate e.g., dizziness or stinging or they can take years to develop e.g. lung disease. The law requires you to adequately control exposure to materials that can cause ill health. This is COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations). These regulations mean you have to identify which substances may be harmful in the workplace and how workers might be exposed and harmed. You also have to look at what measures are in place to prevent harm and whether it is enough, provide information and training and, if appropriate, provide health surveillance.
